Training Costs and Considerations

To apply for a Private Pilot's Certificate you must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a minimum of 40 hours flight experience (Average 60-70 hours)
  • Pass the FAA knowledge (written) exam
  • Pass the FAA practical (flight) test

Training Duration and Costs

  • Many variables affect the total cost of learning to fly, these include: aircraft type, frequency of training and student aptitude.
  • National average for a Private Pilot Certificate from start to finish: $9,900

Keep in mind these costs are spread out over the duration of your training which can be between 4-12 months depending on the frequency of training. The total cost can be minimized by increasing your training frequency to stay current and fresh.

As a benchmark, taking into consideration days when the weather is not suitable for flying, a student that devotes 1 day per week to flight training can expect to complete their training in 12 months.
